Most of us have anywhere from five to 25 bills being automatically paid from our checking accounts or credit cards. This is great because it prevents us from paying our bills late but it’s also easy to lose track of who is actually withdrawing money from our checking accounts or charging our credit cards each month.

What does this mean? It means you take 10% of your after-tax income and save it, preferably using dollar cost averaging in an equity index fund. You do this before making your budget or paying your other bills and you do it every time you get paid. More »
